ConvertKit vs Flodesk: Why I Moved Back to ConvertKit

ConvertKit (aff) and Flodesk (aff) are two great email marketing service providers, especially for digital product creators, coaches, and service providers. But ultimately if you’re going to be selling Digital Products ConvertKit will make everything easier!

Why I Tried Flodesk

Beautiful Templates

When it comes to stylish emails Flodesk is hands down the leader. There are so many options for you to choose from or to inspire you to make your own! This means small business owners are finally able to create an eye-catching email newsletter that aligns with their brand! And a cohesive brand does a lot for recognition!

Pricing

I originally started using Flodesk because the pricing was unbeatable! When I signed up they had a discount $19 forever plan which means you get unlimited everything - subscribers, workflows, tags, forms, etc!

This is incredible when most providers, like ConvertKit, have plans based on subscriber size! This means you never have to worry about your wallet when you focus on growing your email list.

Plus having all features accessible whether you purchase the $38 plan or are lucky enough to have the $19 plan is helpful to any online entrepreneur. Unfortunately with ConvertKit, you need to be on a paid plan to access Automations.

Flodesk still has a discount and you grab it for $19 for the first year, but before you do, check out why I moved back to ConvertKit even if it’s $57 a month for my email list of 3000+ subscribers.

Why I Moved Back to ConvertKit

Workflows/Automations

Outside of beautiful emails and affordable pricing, I started to have trouble with Flodesk Workflows and what ConvertKit calls automation.

Automations are a sequence of events that trigger a process to happen in your business. With an email service provider, this could be to deliver a freebie/opt-in, deliver a paid product, take someone through an email sequence, unsubscribe someone from a series of emails, or even unsubscribe from your list.

ConvertKit has Flodesk beat when it comes to Workflow/Automations. A ConvertKit feature I can’t live without is Rules, which allows you to set up account-wide rules based on so many triggers that Flodesk just doesn’t have.

A/B Testing

Flodesk just doesn’t have this feature. And when you want to test what subject lines are better than another that can potentially help improve conversion rates, then A/B testing is a must-have feature! Luckily ConvertKit has A/B testing when sending broadcast emails.

Integrations

The only true Integrations Flodesk has is with Shopify and Instagram. This means you can directly link your Shopify account and Instagram account to Flodesk. However, if you want to sell digital products and connect them to your Squarespace eCommerce Store, ThriveCart shopping cart, or a third-party form like ConvertBox - you have to use Zapier to connect your Flodesk account.

And Zapier is expensive. The monthly starter plan is $29.99 + $19 = $49! The ConvertKit basic plan is only $29 to start!

Meanwhile, ConvertKit has a bunch of direct integrations with many website platforms, shopping carts, and other automation tools like Make, which I find much easier to use than Zapier.

Dashboard/Analytics

Flodesk does a great job of delivering visual reporting stats for each sent email. But where Flodesk truly lacks basic reporting such as daily, weekly, and monthly new subscribers lists.

For any online digital creator, it’s imperative to know how many new subscribers you’re getting at a glance. What makes ConvertKit even better is that it shows your average open rate and average click rate for all of your broadcast emails. It’s just nice to have a snapshot of your account.

Ease of Selling Digital Products

When I used Squarespace eCommerce for selling my digital products, it was so easy to sell with direct ConvertKit integration, but when I moved to Flodesk I had to make a lot of adjustments.

I learned how to McGyver my way using Make + Zapier to finally get my eCommerce store to connect buyers to Flodesk so I could deliver my digital products. It was a hassle and a lot of work, and I couldn’t imagine building my entire store to retrofit Flodesk. It’s much easier to use a ConvertKit that natively connects with Squarespace and ThriveCart my new shopping cart system.
